Periodontal diseases or periodontitis are inflammatory diseases that lead, without treatment, to the destruction of the bone supporting the teeth. There are several forms of periodontitis, generally of multifactorial origin. Once the diagnosis is made, appropriate treatment is initiated.

This treatment is generally non-surgical. More rarely, it may be surgical as a first step or following non-surgical treatment if the tissue response is insufficient. Once periodontitis is stabilised, regular periodontal maintenance is put in place. The frequency is decided according to risk factors.

This maintenance keeps the disease in a quiescent phase over time. Whatever the form of the pathology or its manifestation, patient cooperation is of paramount importance to the success of treatment.

The gum plays a crucial role in maintaining the bone that supports the tooth. There are various techniques to strengthen or create gum tissue. In most cases, the indication for mucogingival surgery is to ensure long-term retention of the tooth in the arch.

These procedures can also have aesthetic aims.
